Side quest 2026: Learn Spanish and Travel
Where Should You Study Spanish for a fun period abroad?
These are my Top 5 Recommendations and Favourite Countries.
Choosing a destination to practice your Spanish is about more than just picking a school; it’s about the food, the landscapes, and the stories you’ll bring back. I’ve spent months exploring some of these places (and dreaming about the others), so if you are looking for your next immersion spot, here is my personal take on where to go.
Mexico

I spent five months in Mexico and, honestly, I would go back for five more in a heartbeat. It’s the perfect destination for anyone living in the US because it’s so close, and while finding vegetarian options can be a bit of a challenge at times, the food is absolutely worth the effort.

Meet Ixtche! If you want to experience "THE real Mexico," you have to meet Ixtche. Straight from the heart of the country, she has an extensive resume and is a true polyglot (she speaks Russian, Spanish, English, and Italian!). With her endless stories and deep local knowledge, she is an incredible guide to the culture.
Guatemala

This country is a true gem in Latin America and a massive hub for Spanish schools. It is packed with culture and jawdropping scenery. The Lanquín caves are easily the most incredible I’ve seen in my entire life.

Colombia

I spent two months here and quickly realized why it’s so addictive; in fact, so many of my students have Colombian girlfriends now that there must be something in the water! From the vibrant energy of Medellín to the quiet nature in Salento, the variety of plans here is endless.

Peru

I haven’t made it to Peru personally yet, but it’s at the very top of my bucket list. It’s a fantastic place for learners because the accent is famously clear and easy to follow, making it a dream spot for practicing your conversation skills.

Spain

Spain is my second country💖 and a place I find absolutely marvelous.
Pro tip: if you head there, try to find a school that helps with accommodation or visa services, because dealing with those two things can be both tricky and expensive in the bigger cities.
